The Classical Defense of the French Defense, which begins 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bxe7 Qxe7, was popular up to the 1930's.The Classical System experienced a Renaissance in the 90's. Both its theoretical and creative content and reliability of the principle plans quite conform to the contemporary conception of Black's play for obtaining equalization, reflecting the classical opinion of the opening goals, which were defended by Emanuel Lasker as long ago as the late 1800's.
